J series Cummins engine or parts - Smokstak

Do you absolutely need a J engine, or could you use a C model? If memory serves me correctly, the C and J are physically the same size. 4.125" bore x 5" stroke on the J and 4.438" bore x 5" stroke on the C. The rod and main bearing are the same for both.I know of a couple C models, have not seen a J in many years. A friend of mine is in the same boat as you, except his is a Galion grader w/a very tired C-175...he gets parts from some company in CA, Long Beach, (I think). There were apparently lots of C's & J's used in fishing boats, so this outfit still deals in a lot of parts. He got a rebuilt head from them last year. The Cummins dealer here will hardly admit they ever built them, they tried to sell him a repower deal that was more than the whole grader was worth....I think he also has a source in Kansas, more for Galion parts than Cummins though. His ol' grader has been worn out 5 times, but he won't give up on it...thinks it's the only grader anybody ever built...

PS-I can't remember the co. in CA's name, but if you need, I can probably find out... Do you have an engine, or need a whole engine. Cummins made a lot of different J series enjines. one naturall asperated, one supercharged and one supercharged and turbo charged. my dad and i built one 20 or so years ago for a small crane. could still get parts from Cummins then. whatever you do, if you can get them, replace the rod bolts. they are u-bolts and are not to be re-used. i have an overhaul manuel for the engine. the c and j engines were cute and easy to work on.

Mississippi I have a JN130 na. I was hoping to find a source for some parts.
Does it say in the overhaul manual to discard the rod bolts I have a manual also and didn't find that recommendation, it does however require a certain torque procedure for the rod bolts.
Maybe I'll just have to settle for a set of rings as they are not hard to find.
So far I have found a headgasket, rings and rod brgs.
Your right they are a neat engine.
Thanks for the reply
