The Pros and Cons of Capsule House [ Expert Review]

The  concept of capsule homes has gained traction in recent years as an innovative and unconventional approach to urban living. Postmodern, unique, compact, and minimalist, a capsule house is a novel architectural trend. That’s why it makes sense that purchasing one is a hit-and-miss business. Therefore, understanding a capsule home beyond its surface, down to its pros and cons, is an essential move in gaining a solid grounding in its market.

Let’s delve into the fascinating world of capsule houses to unveil the strengths and weaknesses of this avant-garde living style.

What are the pros of a Capsule House?

The pros of a capsule house are as follow:

Sustainability

Several capsule house units, akin to their factory goal, undergo manufacturing processes that leave a low carbon footprint percentage. The materials used for constructing the house off-site are also certified eco-friendly. From the innovative insulation to its energy-efficient lighting technology, it often prioritizes environmentally-conscious design and a sustainable living condition.

Minimalism

The house’s compact and minute size encourages homeowners to put only the least but essential features in. In other words, it encourages you to go minimal. Minimalism is a new age trend borne from the need for practicality. With this kind of setup, you’ll be able to imbibe the values of simplicity and elegance and manifest it into your home.

Affordability

The capsule home is known to be more cost-effective than conventional homes. And this has much to do with its small size. Consequently, its cost-effectiveness is an attractive option for individuals planning to venture into the housing market without shouldering the burden of excessive loans.

Space-Optimized

Space optimization is the ultimate goal of a capsule home. Its compact size allows it to utilize the smallest space in a plot of land in the best condition possible.  This can contribute to sustainable urban development and help address housing shortages in crowded cities. In turn, homeowners living in a densely-populated urban area benefit significantly from such home setup.

Mobility

Most, if not all, capsule homes are modular, portable, and light, making it easy for homeowners to relocate. This mobility can be advantageous for individuals who need to move frequently due to work or personal reasons and prefer a flexible living setup.

What are the cons of a Capsule House?

The cons of a capsule house are as follow:

Lack of Privacy

Most capsule home designs are made to accommodate open-space layouts, often sacrificing privacy. And as a consequence of space-optimization, most houses leave partitions and room divisions out the window. People who value privacy may find this configuration awkward and unsafe.

Resale Value

Despite its prospect, a capsule unit may not be enticing for future buyers in the real property market. In that case, it can be challenging for homeowners to secure profit from it in the future should they decide to sell or arrange it for rent. Even with the shift in house preference, some buyers still prefer the traditional, less-confining homes.

Limited Customization

Not all houses of this type can be customized. This limitation is especially caused by its smaller-than-usual size. For instance, adding a feature in its open-space layout may prove impossible at times given its minimal square footage consumption. Even if you get to update its design, you’ll only end up with an even more confining structure.

Now that you know the pros and cons of buying and owning a capsule unit, it’s time that you learn the tips for purchasing the perfect one…

Building Codes and Regulations

The trend of capsule home construction does not guarantee a full integration into certain land area building codes, regulations, and policies. Setting up in a land plot not supported for capsule home construction can be extra-difficult. As a result, homeowners and architects may have to rethink the house design and fully abandon some of its ideas for the time being.

Limited Space

While an optimized space is indeed smart living, it can, at times, still feel confining and limiting for families who are used to extra-spacious homes. Its minute square footage breadth especially feels more of a drawback to a large family. A family of five is considered a large family for this kind of home. Although it is not impossible for a family of five to live here, certain drastic adjustments still had to be made for them to fit.

Tips for Buying the Right Capsule Home

The following are the tips for buying the right capsule unit for your needs:

    • Consider essential features and factors: Choosing capsule homes will prove futile if you don’t know its features to begin with. Thus, you will need to look into its quality of material, sustainability and eco-friendliness, overall purchasing cost and construction budget, tools and materials needed for construction, unit capacity, and size, requirements for shipping and assembly, and many more.
  • Determine whether you are buying it as a single unit or in bulk: Unless you are planning to wholesale or start your own capsule home business, you shouldn’t consider the bulk-buying solution. Nevertheless, bulk order solutions still fulfill the adage “cheaper by the dozen”. Homeowners who are not only aiming for real property resale in the future, but are also looking to save and ensure customizability, should find bulk-order advantageous. In this case, they must ensure that the company is a trusted one and the building codes and settled for.
  • Research, plan, and evaluate: When planning for capsule home construction, a buyer must learn to plot maps, arrange for land-owning deals, and triangulate with experts on the best companies to partner. Further evaluation of the unit’s possible ROIs vis a vis the ongoing real property market will provide the owner efficient strategies for reselling and setting the unit up for maximum profit in the future.

Conclusion

Capsule homes mark a dramatic shift from traditional housing norms, offering a range of benefits alongside inevitable challenges. The decision to embrace this unique living concept ultimately depends on individual lifestyle, priorities, and preferences.

Although some people thrive in the sustainable and minimalist environment provided by capsule homes, others may find this setup confining, challenging, ang fairly unconventional. But as the architectural trends continue to evolve, capsule homes no doubt provide us a glimpse into the future of urban living. And it is thus our responsibility to learn the pros and cons of capsule house.

Can You Live in a Capsule House Long Term? Absolutely!

Yes, HIDULAR capsule houses are designed to perform efficiently in cold climates, keeping your home warm and comfortable even in low temperatures.

Standard Unit Performance

Our standard model operates efficiently in temperatures from 23°F to 131°F (-5°C to 55°C), suitable for various climates, including cold conditions.

Thermal Resistance: The polyurethane foam insulation and extruded board have a thermal resistance of 3.2m²·K/W, which is six times more efficient than traditional materials. This helps retain heat and reduces energy costs in colder months.

Air Tightness: With an air tightness rating of n50 = 0.45, our capsule houses have very low air leakage, minimizing heat loss and maintaining a cozy indoor environment.

Winter Version Upgrades

‍For those living in areas with more extreme cold, we offer a winter version of our capsule houses, which includes several enhancements to ensure optimal performance and comfort in harsh climates. This version is designed to perform exceptionally well in temperatures as low as -31°F (-35°C) and up to 140°F (60°C).

  1. Usage Temperature: The winter version can withstand a wider range of temperatures, from -31°F to 140°F (-35°C to 60°C), making it ideal for extremely cold environments.
  2. Floor Heating Options: The winter version includes the option to install floor heating, which can be customized with either water circulation underfloor heating or graphene electric heating modules. These options provide consistent and even warmth throughout your home:
    - Water Circulation Underfloor Heating: This system heats a liquid, such as car antifreeze, circulating through pipes under the floor to provide even warmth.
    - Graphene Electric Heating Modules: This is a liquid-free option that uses graphene electric heating modules to directly heat the floor, offering a maintenance-free solution.
  3. Water Pipe Insulation: Enhanced pipe insulation with automatic heating prevents freezing and ensures functionality in cold weather.
  4. Upgraded Air Conditioning: The winter version includes upgraded air conditioning units with heating functions, providing reliable performance and additional warmth in extreme cold.

Yes, HIDULAR capsule houses are designed to perform exceptionally well in hot climates, ensuring comfort even in high temperatures.

Ventilation and Cooling Options

To enhance comfort in hot conditions, all our capsule houses come equipped with split air conditioning units, tailored to the size and design of each model to ensure optimal cooling:

E15: 1.5P split AC
E25: 1.5P split AC
E30: 2P split AC
E40: 1.5P + 2P split ACs
E40S: 1.5P x 2 split ACs (Gree) – These units are designed to operate efficiently in a wide temperature range from -22°F to over 140°F (-30°C to over 60°C).
T30: 2P split AC
T30F: 2P split AC

These air conditioning systems ensure that each capsule house remains cool and comfortable, even on the hottest days. In addition to AC units, our capsule houses are also equipped with windows that can be opened to allow fresh air in, providing natural ventilation when desired. The "P" in the AC specifications refers to the horsepower (HP) rating of the unit, indicating the cooling capacity; higher numbers denote greater cooling power.

Standard Unit Performance in Hot Climates

Thermal Resistance: Our capsule houses are built to operate efficiently in temperatures up to 140°F, making them ideal for hot climates. The thermal resistance of our polyurethane foam insulation and extruded board is 3.2m²·K/W, meaning our insulation effectively resists heat flow. This high level of thermal resistance is six times more efficient than traditional building materials, helping to keep the interior cool by minimizing heat transfer from the outside.

Air Tightness: Additionally, our buildings achieve an air tightness rating of n50 = 0.45, which indicates a very low rate of air leakage. This is crucial for maintaining a stable indoor temperature by preventing hot air from entering and cool air from escaping, ensuring the interior remains cool and comfortable, even during the hottest days.

With these features, HIDULAR capsule houses provide a reliable and comfortable living environment in hot climates, ensuring you stay cool and relaxed no matter how high the temperatures rise.

While all of our capsule houses provide solid, functional living spaces with the same durable structure—anti-seismic hot-dip galvanized steel structural system, multi-layer thermal insulation structural system, and fluorocarbon paint—the T-Series offers additional features and enhancements:

More Glass Coverage: The T-Series features extensive glass coverage with windows on three sides of the house, compared to the E-Series, which typically covers only two sides.
Comprehensive Lighting: The T-Series includes more comprehensive lighting, with increased ambient lighting throughout both the interior and exterior.
Models with Balconies: Only the T-Series has models with balconies, specifically the T30, T40, and T40P.
AC Presentation: The E-Series uses wall-mounted split AC units, whereas the T-Series conceals the splits and uses vents for a more streamlined appearance.

The E-Series is a versatile base model, offering durability and functionality, while the T-Series builds on that with additional features and provides a more modern, luxurious living experience.

More Space: Our capsule houses are 10.5 feet wide and 10.5 feet tall, with a standing height of 7 feet 10.5 inches. This extra width provides significantly more room compared to tiny homes made from standard containers, which are only 8 feet wide. While the standing height is similar, container homes are typically 8.5-9.5 feet tall.

Durability:
Our products are constructed with high-quality materials like aviation-grade aluminum plates and anti-seismic hot-dip galvanized steel, can last up to 50 years, significantly longer than the typical 20-30 years of traditional tiny homes

Nature Resistance: Engineered for severe weather, capsule homes can withstand hurricanes with wind speeds up to 70 meters per second and earthquakes up to a magnitude of 9, offering greater protection relative to the majority of tiny homes.

Installation: Prefabricated for easy placement by crane, capsule homes can be installed in as little as one day, much faster than the time required to install traditional tiny homes.

Energy Efficiency: Capsule homes are designed with advanced multi-layer thermal insulation and energy-efficient systems, reducing heating and cooling costs. Traditional tiny homes often lack these features, leading to higher energy bills.

Additional Features: Capsule houses also offer advanced smart home technologies, sound insulation rated to reduce noise by at least 55dB, and external hydropower connections, providing a more modern and convenient living experience.

Environmental Protection: All materials used in our capsule houses are environmentally friendly and pollution-free, complying with national air quality standards, and they are designed to be approximately 65% more energy-efficient compared to traditional constructions.

Our team is available to offer guidance and support throughout this process, helping you to plan and prepare effectively.

After placing your order, we will send you details such as dimensions, weight, and the expected arrival date.

You will need to coordinate with a trucking company or contractor to pick up the capsule house from the port. Arrange a service that can handle oversized loads and has the necessary equipment. They will need to confirm any special handling requirements and know specific pick-up procedures from the port.

Additionally, the site needs to be prepared with all necessary foundations and utility connections, including water, power supply, and sewage pipelines. For more detailed information, please view the FAQ category "Site Preparation."

Before the installation of your capsule house, you need to ensure that the following utilities are prepared and ready:

Water: Ensure that a water supply line is installed and operational at the installation site. If a connection to a public water supply is not available, a holding tank for water can be used.
Sewer: Make sure that sewer connections are in place and ready to be connected to the capsule house. If a connection to a public sewer system is not available, a septic tank can be used.
Electricity: Verify that electrical connections are available and can be hooked up to the capsule house upon installation.

Having these utilities prepared and ready before installation will help ensure a smooth and efficient setup of your new capsule house.

During the transportation phase, the capsule houses are transported using standard semi-trailers with dimensions of 57.4 feet in length, 9.8 feet in width, and a height of no more than 13.8 feet. Customers will need to arrange for a trucking company to handle the transportation of the capsule house to the site.

In the lifting stage, after the goods arrive at the site, customers need to have a local crane service to unload and place the capsule house. The lifting weight of our products ranges from 6 to 10 tons, and we recommend using a crane with a minimum capacity of 25 tons for loading and unloading.

During the installation phase, customers must complete on-site engineering of water supply, power supply, sewage pipelines, and solid ground or load-bearing foundations according to the standard basic water and electricity drawings we provide. Customers will need to hire a qualified contractor or installer to complete the installation, accurately position the capsule house, and connect water and electricity.

The capsule house is fully inspected before it leaves our warehouse. However, unintentional damage can sometimes occur in transit.

Please inspect the capsule house thoroughly upon delivery from the port. If any damage is found, alert the delivery personnel, take pictures, and contact your capsule home representative immediately.

If any damages occur during transportation to the site or during installation, it would be the liability of the respective trucking company or contractor. We recommend that customers find a licensed local contractor with general liability insurance for the installation process.
