High end recessed lighting for residential - Mike Holt's Forum

Retired and some what out of the loop but always used Lightolier brand. When I saw fancy Hi hats in an Atlantic City Casino that the brass was so polished they looked gold plated and counter man at electrical supply house said they were made by Lightolier and cost over $100 each many years ago. The had a model 711 rough in that was head over heels of all other brands due to it could be used j both old & new work, never had sharp edges like garbage from cheating china, & might have been the first brand out that not only had built in cable clamp but a built-in ground wire. Was able to purchase a replacement hi hat trim for a faded Lightolier Hi hat in my own home that was over 25 years old. I would start with what you want the lighting to do......
What look do you want? Size, shape, etc
How high are the ceilings?
Spot, flood, wall washers?
Color temp?

I don't believe a single brand covers everything you might look for, but Juno has a lot of options across a wide price range.

There are some specialty options which you might find by looking in the audio/visual arena This really depends on what you consider "High End" and what the customer whats.

For our basic job we use the Halo RL4 series trims. Occasionally Nora Cobalt especially if they want adjustable since they are nicer than the Halo. The Nora adjusts internally so it does not hang down like the Halo gimbal.

When the customer wants higher end lights the most common ones we use are from Lutron, WAC, Element and Fusion. Have also used may others over the years. Those I just mentioned typically run in the $300-$500 range depending on options. Some of the recessed lights can be $1,000+

Many jobs we do specify flangless trims so that eliminates the basic lights.

When I built my own house 4 years ago I used 3" Fusion with flanged trims. I had them built with Smart Dim (Dim to Warm) LED chips and Lutron drivers. I wanted the Lutron drivers to get the best dimming from the RadioRA dimmers. Lutron drivers are also much higher quality than the generic drivers most manufactures offer as their standard. My sales person and the manufacture rep worked with me since it was my own house but they were still about $300 each X 76 lights.
